Developed in the 1870s, LeDroit Park/Bloomingdale
was one of Washington’s first suburbs. Less than
two miles from the U.S. Capitol and several prominent
universities (Howard University, Catholic University,
and Trinity College), the LeDroit Park/Bloomingdale neighborhood
occupies an area located immediately adjacent to Howard
University. This neighborhood borders Channing Street
to the North, 1st Street to the east, Rhode Island Avenue
and Florida Avenue to the south, and Georgia Avenue to
the west.
By the 1940s LeDroit Park/Bloomingdale
became a major focal point for the African-American elite
as many prominent figures resided there. Victorian mansions
and row homes still populate the tree-lined streets. Near
its center, the charming Anna J. Cooper Circle (an influential
African-American scholar), serves as a traffic circle
and park at the intersection of 3rd and T Streets NW.
LeDroit Park/Bloomingdale has its own
greenspace, Crispus Attucks Park. This hidden gem is flanked
by the alleys of the 2000 blocks of North Capitol and
1st Streets NW and the unit blocks of V and U Streets
NW.
LeDroit Park/Bloomingdale is served
by the Metrorail system at nearby Shaw/Howard University
station (Green and Yellow lines). An abundance of retail,
entertainment, dining, and shopping options exist in nearby
U Street and Logan Circle.
